DW and OLAP solutions are traditionally expensive. Since MS SQL Server 7.0 the price for the tools went down. Still, the process of creating an Enterprise Data Warehouse and OLAP cubes can take a lot of time and swallow up a lot of money, so many medium-sized and smaller companies do not dare to start such a project.
By the end of year 2004 the work on an OLAP project I was involved in successfully finished. Together with rest of the team we managed to effectively control the expenses for development and, as we hope the future will show, for maintenance of a smaller Data Warehouse and couple of OLAP cubes. As this experience might be useful for other BI developers, I am publishing a complete case study here.
